Abell 12 (PN)

../dss/dss2red_060220.05_+093914.09_5_web.jpg
Image source: DSS II (red) - 5×5'
Name: Abell 12, PK198-6.1
Type: PN
Constellation: Ori
Coordinates: 06h02m20.05s / +09°39'14.09"
Brightness / Size: 13m9 / 0.6x0.6'
Robert Zebahl
102mm f/11, 160x + UHC, Bortle 6-, SQM-L 19.0
The halo of mu Ori was quite small and not very distinctive. Abell 12 was outside the halo and revealed itself with averted vision almost permanently as an extremely faint, very diffuse, roundish and uniform brightening. At lower magnifications with UHC or [OIII] filter the nebula was not visible.

DIFFICULT
120mm f/5, 75x + [OIII], Bortle 4, SQM-L 21.1
Conditions in the target region: SQM-L 20.6
Not evident, rather faint, round. Brightness at the edge slightly declines, otherwise the nebula appears evenly bright.

MODERATE
152mm f/5.9, 100x + [OIII], Bortle 6-, SQM-L 19.2
Faint, roundish, evenly bright. Slightly outside of the halo of mu Ori.

MODERATE
8" f/6, 96x + [OIII], Bortle 4-
Filter highly recommended, otherwise the bright 4.12m mu Ori in a distance of less than 1 arcminute will outshine the nebula. With [OIII] filter well seen with averted vision, round, evenly bright.

MODERATE
René Merting
100mm f/6.4, 107x + [OIII], SQM-L 21.5

The second component was immediately seen as faint companion.

70mm f/5.7, 67x
First attempt at 133x: much fainter component clearly visible as a tiny star at a relatively large distance. After that the visibility was easy even at 67x. At 44x the faint component could only be guessed.

102mm f/11, 160x, Bortle 7, SQM-L 18.8, Seeing 3-4/5
Much fainter companion immediately visible as tiny star far outside the diffraction pattern of the primary component.
