- Thin Galaxies (CVn) -

Here I will present some quite thin galaxies with an axis ratio of at least 1:5. Nevertheless this value is calculated from the given angular size, so the visual impression can differ.

Constellation: CVn
Coordinates: 12h17m29.66s / +37°48'25.60"
Brightness / Size: 10m0 / 15.9x2.5'
120mm f/5, 48x, Bortle 6, NELM 5.0+, SQM-L 19.5
Very elongated, thin, evenly bright. Well visible with averted vision.

MODERATE
120mm f/5, 48x, Bortle 4, SQM-L 21.3
Already visible at 23x with averted vision. At 48x very evident with averted vision, obviously elongated, tapering endings, thin, getting slightly brighter towards the middle.

Group: Arp281, NGC4631 Group
Type: GLX
Constellation: CVn
Coordinates: 12h42m08.01s / +32°32'29.44"
Brightness / Size: 9m2 / 15.5x2.7'
B 40mm, 8x, Bortle 7, NELM 5.0, SQM-L 19.3

FAILED
B 40mm, 8x, Bortle 4, NELM 6.1, SQM-L 21.1
SQM-L 20.9: Slightly elongated, rather faint brightening.

MODERATE
8" f/6, 37x, Bortle 4
Large, very bright, very elongated with tapering ending on the west side. Broadening towards the brighter core, which is slightly shifted to the east along the longitudinal axis.

NGC5023 (GLX)

../dss/dss2blue_131211.80_+440216.88_6_web.jpg
Image source: DSS II (blue) - 6×6'
Name: NGC5023, UGC8286, H2.664
Type: GLX
Constellation: CVn
Coordinates: 13h12m11.80s / +44°02'16.88"
Brightness / Size: 12m3 / 5.8x0.8'
8" f/6, 100x, Bortle 4
At 37x almost obvious with averted vision. Wonderful elongated, thin, evenly bright. Despite the fairly high surface brightness the galaxy suffer from brightened sky!
