- Thin Galaxies (Com) -

Here I will present some quite thin galaxies with an axis ratio of at least 1:5. Nevertheless this value is calculated from the given angular size, so the visual impression can differ.

Brightness / Size: 12m7 / 5.0x0.7'
120mm f/5, 48x, Bortle 4, SQM-L 21.3
Tried at 48x and 85x.

FAILED
8" f/6, 100x, Bortle 3, NELM 6.3, SQM-L 21.5
Held with averted vision. Very thin & elongated, fairly faint, evenly bright without distinct core.

DIFFICULT
8" f/6, 150x, Bortle 4
However, it is damned faint ;)
FAILED

Very faint, evenly bright, elongated.
MODERATE

NGC4565 (GLX)

../dss/dss2blue_123620.80_+255914.61_15_web.jpg
Image source: DSS II (blue) - 15×15'
Name: NGC4565, UGC7772, H5.24
Type: GLX
Constellation: Com
Coordinates: 12h36m20.80s / +25°59'14.61"
Brightness / Size: 9m5 / 14.9x2.0'
102mm f/11, 86x, Bortle 6, SQM-L 19.2
At 28x overall rather faint, very elongated with evident, bright center. At 86x the center appeared slightly oval and was barely visible with direct vision. The outer parts are much fainter.

EASY
8" f/6, 37x, Bortle 4
Extremely elongated, tapering endings, bulgy core. The very bright, round core is most evident. At 100x the dust lane is evident with averted vision (especially in the bright core) and slightly shifted to NE.
